Transfagarasan Road or DN7C, also known as Ceausescu’s Madness is one of the most spectacular roads in the World. With its 90 km long, the road crosses the Carpathian Mountains between the highest peaks in the country. It was built in the early 1970's as a military route using roughly six million kilos (6000 tons) of dynamite.

Transfagarasan Road rises to a height of 2042 m, it is a winding road, marked with sharp hairpin turns, long S-curves and steep descents. It is an attraction and a challenge for hikers, cyclists but especially for drivers and motorcycle enthusiasts. You don’t need to run with 200 km/h to feel the adrenaline, 40 km/h is enough, as that being the average speed due to topography of the road. So, what you are waiting for?

Period: 13.06.2019 - 31.10.2019

Duration: 14 h

Departure time: 07:00 AM

!!! Pickup from your accommodation in Bucharest between 06:00 AM - 06:45 AM. I will notify you by phone/SMS or e-mail for a closer estimated pickup time the day before tour after I know other tourists who booked on your tour.

On this One Day Tour I’ll take you on the “World’s Best Road” according to Jeremy Clarkson, host of the Top Gear TV show. We travel in a private minibus with fully adjustable seats that will make your trip very comfortable.

We’ll leave Bucharest in the morning at 07:00 AM. Will take the highway A1 towards Pitesti and afterwards will drive through the Arges river gorge.

First stop will be in Curtea de Arges, former capital of Wallachia. Here will visit one of the most beautiful Romanian Orthodox cathedral, originally built in 1512-1517. It holds a really interesting legend that will be told to you on the spot. Next stop will be at Poenari Fortress ruins, known as the real Castle of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula). It is perched on a high cliff accessible only by climbing 1480 stairs. We will only look at it from below and take pictures of it.

Further north we’ll reach Vidraru Lake reservoir retained by a dam. We’ll have a short stop here to take pictures. The road continues over the dam.

The following stop will be right at the top of the road, at 2042m altitude. Here will have a break to admire the breathtaking scenery. If the weather allows, you’ll have the whole picture of the road with all the hairpins turns. Surrounded by mountain peaks you’ll see also the Balea Glacial Lake, the perfect setting for a photo session.

After break we’ll continue our journey on the northern side of the road. Next stop will be at a very good Romanian restaurant to have a well-deserved traditional lunch. You’ll taste all the delicacies of Romanian cuisine.

After lunch break we’ll head straight to Sibiu City, the capital of Transylvania. You’ll have here up to 2h of free time to explore by yourself the old downtown. You can shop souvenirs for your loved ones, have a drink at a nice terrace in the Large Square  or simply admire the beautiful buildings that surround the market. Be careful! Pay attention to the rooftops. Sibiu is the city with eyes! :)

Expected time of return in Bucharest is 22:00, traffic or other circumstances can be unpredictable so please do not schedule something else close to that time.

!!! Please kindly note that Transfagarasan Road is closed during the winter season. Opening/Closing date depends on weather conditions, every year. For more information please check the website of National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (
